FAQ’s
Here are the answers to some of the frequently asked questions about the support the DMUK provides to UK dental registrants. Please email [email protected] if you have any further questions.
What support do Mentors and Development Advisors offer?
Mentors provide guidance on career and business development, as well as clinical excellence. Development Advisors specialize in supporting professionals navigating GDC complaints and Fitness to Practice processes.
Do I need a Mentor if I’m not in trouble?
Mentoring isn’t just for those facing challenges. Everyone benefits from mentoring at different stages of their career, not just during difficult times. The GDC’s focus on patient safety means mentoring can help you maintain high standards and avoid potential issues.
How do I find a Mentor?
Browse our directory of Mentors online. Alternatively, contact us for personalised recommendations.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions depends on your individual needs. Your mentor will work with you to establish a suitable timeframe and frequency.
When should I reach out to a Mentor if I anticipate a complaint?
Engaging a mentor early can demonstrate insight and awareness, even before a formal complaint arises
What’s the difference between Mentors and Development Advisors?
While all Development Advisors are Mentors not all mentors are Development Advisors. Development Advisors are trained to support dental professionals under GDC-imposed conditions or investigations. They must be approved by the GDC.
How do Mentors differ from dento-legal advisors?
Mentors and Development Advisors complement the work of dento-legal advisors. They provide emotional support, practical advice, and insight development but do not offer legal advice.
What if I don’t get along with my Mentor?
Most mentors offer a free initial consultation to ensure compatibility. If issues arise, discuss them with your mentor to find a resolution. If the relationship cannot be salvaged, you can choose another mentor.
Who pays the Mentor or Development Advisor?
Mentees pay mentors directly. Fees are agreed upon before the mentoring relationship begins.
