Why Use Dental Mentors UK

Dental Mentors UK was set up and is run by two experienced dentists (Janine Brooks & Jane Davies-Slowik) who are also mentors and coaches. Between us we have mentored and/or coached over 80 dental professionals, we know the benefits that mentoring can bring and we have seen the results. We believe in high quality, ethical mentoring and value honestly, integrity and professionalism. All the mentors who are members of Dental Mentors UK will receive supervision and have the back up of tools to ensure their mentoring techniques are maintained. All mentors will have access to relevant continuing professional development and further training.

Mentoring is increasingly being seen by organisations as a way of helping and supporting the development of employees and staff. The word mentor has come to mean trusted adviser, friend, teacher and wise person. In dentistry we are beginning to appreciate the benefits of mentoring and more dental professionals have undertaken training to become mentors. The Standing Conference on Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education (SCOPME) described mentoring in 1998 as:-

’The process whereby an experienced, highly regarded, empathic person (the mentor), guides another individual (the mentee) in the development and re-examination of their own ideas, learning, and personal and professional development. The mentor who often, but not necessarily, works in the same organisation or field as the mentee, achieves this by listening and talking in confidence to the mentee.’

Benefits of Mentoring

Mentoring can support dental professionals (mentees) in a number of ways:

  • Making a career choice or change of direction

  • Personal development, for example leadership, taking on new challenges

  • Performance and remediation

The benefits of mentoring go beyond the mentee, everyone can benefit including and most importantly the patient, but also the practice and everyone who works with the mentee. Being a mentor or being mentored is personally satisfying and both benefit from the relationship.
