Philip Dawson

I qualified from Liverpool University BDS in 1991 having previously gained a BSc (Hons) degree in Pharmacology.

I was awarded the Diploma in Restorative Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons in December 2008; and an MSc in Restorative Dentistry followed this from the University of Leeds in 2010.

I have recently been awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education (Distinction) from Edge Hill University and am currently (March 2021) studying for an MA.

As well as working in general practice 3 days per week, I was, until March 2020, a Specialty Dentist at the University of Manchester Dental School helping to tutor final year students. I left this role as I was appointed Associate Dental Dean for Conduct and Performance at Health Education England (NW).

I examine for the Overseas Registrant Exam (ORE) and am Course Director/Tutor/Examiner for the FGDP's Diploma in Aesthetic & Restorative Dentistry.

Dentistry and education are real passions of mine and I have been an Educational Supervisor/Vocational Trainer for nearly 20 years mentoring over 20 Foundation Dentists/Vocational trainees in their foundation year. Prior to my appointment as Associate Dental Dean, I also acted as an HEE (NW) appointed mentor helping those registrants who required assistance for a whole range of reasons – health, addiction, and reduced performance being the most common.

Successful mentoring, in my opinion, is about sharing experiences in a safe, non-judgemental environment with those who have genuine empathy and insight as well as the credibilty to provide real support.
