I have always had a strong attraction to education and training of peers. I feel it really plays to my strengths and personality. I first knew I had a connection with education when I found training dental nurses gave me a real sense of job satisfaction and achievement. I have a natural ability to connect and bring out the best in others; I enjoy building rapports, and seeing the change in someone knowing that I have contributed to that development. I have a passion for mentoring and have undertaken several courses in this field including “Changing Conversations”, “supervising trainee dentists” and “supporting the trainee in difficulty”.
I truly believe in reflective practice and encourage this style of working on a regular basis, across the roles I have, it has certainly made me a better clinician and mentor! With learning beyond registration being of utmost importance for a successful and happy career within dentistry.
Within my role as Lead Therapist, in general practice, I have 9 other hygienists and therapists working within the corporate. I am responsible for their individual monitoring for the business, working in close relation with the referring dentists to achieve a mutually beneficial skill mix working environment. From a personal development point of view, I work with them to continually improve and support any learning objectives they may have identified.
As Programme Lead for Foundation Therapy Training I act as Educational Supervisor and Mentor for the trainees, guiding them through the year, undertaking workplace based assessments and helping them adapt to General Practice life as they embark on their new careers.
I have recently been appointed as a GDC Fitness to Practice Panellist.
I am a punctual and ethical individual with a patient-centred, team approach. I have 12 years’ experience working in the NHS environments, which I hope to be valuable to other hygienists, therapists and other members of the dental team who may require mentoring, advice or guidance through a particular part of their career.
Upon self-reflection, I believe I am approachable, enthusiastic, committed and driven. I have found that past mentees relate to me well and find the relationship successful.
